PES to Sarkozy's Presidency: coordinated investment could create millions of jobs
Speaking in the European Parliament debate today on the French Presidency, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen told French President Nicolas Sarkozy that if EU member states increased investment by one per cent, Europe could create 10 million new jobs in four years.

PES activists Forum in Vienna
The PES welcomes its activists in Vienna from 4-6 July for the first PES activists Forum - "A strong voice for European Social Democracy". Over 300 activists from all Europe participated this weekend in workshops on the PES manifesto consultation and on campaigning. PES President, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Alfred Gusenbauer, Federal Chancellor of Austria, Andreas Schieder, State Secretary within the Austrian Federal Chancellery, and Ania Skrzypek, Secretary General of ECOSY welcomed the participants in the opening session of the Forum.

PES calls for dynamic Socialist International
In a video message to delegates at the Socialist International congress in Athens PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said we needed “an effective, dynamic, viable, visionary Socialist International.” Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said that rising food prices, financial crisis, climate change created a “new global challenge” where a “strong progressive agenda” was needed.

Last chance for Barroso to present progressive Social Agenda
Tomorrow the European Commission will present its "Social Agenda", including proposals on anti-discrimination legislation, cross-border access to health services and European Works Councils. PES President commented that "the Social Agenda is the European Commission's last chance to show that Europe is more than a market, to show that it cares about the everyday concerns of European citizens".

Poul Nyrup Rasmussen meets EDEK Leader Yiannakis Omirou
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen held a meeting in Brussels with the President of the Cyprus Social Democratic Movement EDEK, Yiannakis Omirou. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen gave the full support of the PES to efforts by Cypriot Social Democrats to get at least one MEP elected in the European elections next year.

The Party of European Socialists today praised the PSD for their triumph as the no1 party in Town Halls across Romania. It is the result of the PSD’s excellent record in local government, as well as the party reforms led by Mircea Geoana."
