PROUDEST moments of Social Democracy in Central EU
Date2008/02/20 02:20 by: Slovak EU CitizenJust wanted to remind our fellow Europeans that Social Democracy has a long tradition in Central Europe.
One of the examples is Ivan Derer, a leader of the Slovak Social Democrats between the World Wars, key founders of the First Democratic Czechoslovakia, Minister of Justice, Education and Minister for Slovakia during First Czechoslovakia.
He predicted and tried to prevent the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and therefore fostered his vision of united Czechoslovakia.
And he paid a price.
Ivan Derer spent the II World War in Terezin (a Nazi concentration camp) and after the II World War he was sentenced to a Communist prison due to his anti-Nazi and anti-Communist believes. His family suffered together with him with tragic consequenses.
As a Slovak and a European, I am proud of these Social Democrats who fought for freedom in Central Europe. We will carry these heros in our hearts.
