Socialist identity
Date2006/05/16 14:00 by: Mark VargaDear Comrades,
First of all I hope I can adress you with this international expression. In my homeland, Hungary, the word "comrade" still has a negative meaning because of the soviet era before the '90s.
In the 21st century, as the residents of the EU, a peaceful Europe with full of new ideas and possibilities we should determine who we, socialist and socialdemocrats, are in this changing world. I know that in given political questions we can identify us, but with simple words, how would you determine socialdemocracy in EU in some sentences?
best regard

Social democracies first aim is egalitarian democracy: one person, one vote... that is the basic guiding principle...
the socialist ideal, is to redistribute some of the wealth and means to those with the least of means and wealth. This by organising politically(and integrating into society) the socially/politically weaker people, in unions and political parties, so they might be stronger, and become part of the political process in a constructive and democratic way.
thirdly, the individuals freedom, how can we increase the freedom of EVERY individual in society?
Socialist identity isn't very important, the accomplishments are, socialist identity should one day become maybe obsolete, that would be just fine, comrades! let us not be distracted by formulations such as 'comrades', it is not important. Furthering democracy is!
best wishes,

I do not really agree on the sentence of F about the fact the socialism one day could be obsolte and it is fine. I think F has highlighted very well the core foundations of European socialism. I would summarise that Socialism works to develop a society, which has capacity to ensure to all people the same opportunities. I do not really see how this could be obsolete. I hope we all have the strengh to confirm the validity of socialism analysing our path until now and developing strategies to answer the needs of our time.

V might be right, we might have to wait a very long time untill obsoleteness of socialist endeavor happens :(
my main point is, that accomplishing these goals of providing people with opportunities, making them solidaric ith eachother, are more important then constructing a socialist identity...
let me put it this way: they are not uniquely monopolisticly socialist ideals... in my opinion...
