Italy, the return of the Socialist Party
Date2007/10/09 19:31 by: Antonio MatassoPSE President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen attended the policy conference of the reconstituted Socialist Party, which was held in Rome on 5th and 6th October. The Socialist Party (PS) merges all the parties of the Italian socialist "diaspora", which was caused by the end of the old PSI: SDI (Italian Democratic Socialists), NPSI (New Italian Socialist Party, led by Gianni De Michelis and Mauro Del Bue), I Socialisti Italiani (The Italian Socialists, led by Bobo Craxi, son of the late leader of the Italian Socialist Party and Prime Minister from 1983 to 1987, Bettino Craxi) and a group of comrades from the DS (Democrats of Left) who dislike the project of the so-called "Democratic Party". The "Democratic Party" will be an union between the majority of the DS and the centrist party Margherita (Daisy): it is very probable that the Italian "DP" will not be part of the PES. Date2007/10/11 17:19 by: MarcoOf course it is a return but I think and hope that the spirit with which we do this is renovated. In fact this cannot be at all just a way to put together "old socialists". At the conference we escaped this risk since there were many contributions from different people coming from different political experiences. The only thing I hope is that young people will have more space and voice of course connected to their commitment and skills.
