Stop Human Trafficking - Labour Youth Ireland

Issued : Friday 24 November, 2006
Labour Youth is marking International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, (tomorrow, Saturday 25 November) by calling on the Government to honour its commitment to introduce legislation criminalising the trafficking of human beings for sexual exploitation.
Labour Youth activist and National Executive member Rebecca Moynihan commented, “Despite the Government promising legislation in response to the excellent Prime Time investigation on trafficking, there has been no movement on this issue.
“Ireland is alone in the EU in having no legislation governing the trafficking of human beings, despite the August 2004 deadline for implementation of the EU Council framework decision requiring Member States to criminalise trafficking.
“Ireland has become a soft target for trafficking because while prostitution is illegal and the victims of trafficking can be jailed or deported, there is no mechanism for targeting the traffickers.
“It is a disgrace that the Irish Government has failed to make human trafficking a criminal offence. The lives women are being are unnecessarily being put at risk through their political complacency.”
“Labour Youth is also calling for a comprehensive European wide strategy to tackle the problem of human trafficking led by EU Justice and Interior Ministers. The EU has a leading role to play in the fight against trafficking within the union and worldwide, but the political will to tackle this problem must exist at the highest level.”

Plus 'modern' Ireland could care less. Too horny and loads of money to spend. Is it any wonder the Irish are in the slave trade?
