International Children’s Rights Day - 20 November
Date2006/11/21 20:01 by: electraDear PES activists,
With regard to the children’s rights day celebrated yesterday, I would like to share with you some of my thoughts and worries in this issue.
I personally feel that not enough is being done around the world to protect what is the most helpless and most vulnerable member of our society: children. There are so many problems around the world, however I do believe that children are the guarantee, our guarantee for a better future and we are not doing enough to protect this guarantee. I know we have heard this story over and over again, but I cannot help feeling utterly disappointed and even that I somehow fail as a citizen of the world when we are not able to protect the children. Everyday millions of children die because of hunger, war or diseases, are submitted to psychological and physical abuse! I must admit I have a hard time admitting to myself that there is nothing we can do to stop this. When in third world countries children die from AIDS or other diseases, hunger or left without families and in civilized countries the judicial system approves the existence of "certain" parties in the name of freedom of expression...what about children’s right to love, protection, equal treatment?! ...I do not believe that any judicial system could be severe enough to punish violent acts in whatever form against children...They can neither take care nor defend themselves. They need and trust us to do it for them. Therefore it is our obligation to keep them safe and sound...let us all reflect how we can contribute in educating our society how to prevent children from suffering and protecting them. This could be a good starting point!
