Date2005/10/05 18:55 by: DeveThe rules for admission of new state members should be equal for all. Turkey has the same right to join the EU as have anyother country which fulfills the criteria used the EU institutions... There are some problems with the Turkey recognisation of the greek Cyprus but it's not anything which cannot be solved throught negotiations.

Date2005/10/09 19:19 by: JAMFrom a liberal left point of view I'm concerned about the effect that admitting such a large country with a large religious fundamentalist bloc would have on liberty and tolerance in the EU. With a new religious right government in Poland (see their comments about gay people) I'm concerned about parts of the east becoming like the Midwest in the USA.
Western Europe combines the best values of social responsibilities and personal rights and I wouldn't like to see this diluted by an 'unholy' alliance of the Christian and Islamic Right.
Of course I see the arguments about rejection of Turkey turning the country even more towards the fundamentalists... -
