I very much welcome the initiative for a new Social Europe, to be discussed at the upcoming PES Congress. In my point of view it looks like an innovative turning point of thinking and transforming the old values of equality, liberty and justice into the new century and adaptation to the global challenges of the international division of labour. Europe faces a lot of challenges of well known political issues, but also new ones are appearing. The strength of Europe’s competitiveness towards USA and Japan is well known, but towards a rapid changing China and India, Europe together with the rest of the western world faces new competitive challenges. The international division of labour and the market challenges is a strong force and has major implications for the citizens in the entire world and foremost for the European citizens. Some of the consequences are already at sight, and I believe the economic and political situation is just at its very beginning.
