No Michael Moore - 20-06-2007 17:04:52 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
This was this morning great disappointment: Michael Moore can't make it to DC because of thunder storms. So instead we saw the trailer of his new movie Sicko, which is on American healthcare system. The movie looks as controversial as his former ones.
There is much more to say about TBA conference. We all have learned an awful lot. It's ime to pack and go home. Let's hope that the air traffic won't be too bad . -
Hillary and Nancy - 20-06-2007 16:53:50 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
Americans see Hillary Clinton as a highly competent but not very warm person. The latest polls say that 43% of the Americans would vote for her vs 25% for Obama, her unique serious challenger so far. In order to break her stiff image and present the song of her campaign she released a short movie featuring Bill and, believe it or not, the Soprano (see it at http://www.hillaryclinton.com/?splash=1). Competent she is that's for sure and maybe the most competent of all candidates. But it's also true that she's tough, especially she says that "the US troops have done their job in Iraq, it is the Iraqi government that failed". The entire room boohed her, but she just continued talking. Her programme comprises: creating an academy of education to make young American serve their country (she says that if she's elected president, "the White House won't be a revolving door for the well-connected, but a door of opportunity for the well-qualified); universal and affordable quality health care; invest massively in research, she insisted on the fact that there is no conflict between science and faith; fight against global warming; right to vote to every citizen (facilitating vote basically); and of course, end the war in Iraq.
Nancy Pelosi arrived on the stage accompanied by "Beautiful Day" by U2, which as such, is a good sign... She gave the audience a complete overview of what the House has done since the last election and all the things that still need to be done. She's the only speaker who, when referring to the war in Iraq, mentioned Iraqi casualties. She got a standing ovation for that. She also mentioned Darfour and the total denial of the situation by the government of Sudan. The place of America in the world: the need to start a relationship with the rest of the world based on cooperation, mutual understanding and not talking down to other nations. People really do appreciate this great woman. -

Just as an apetizer, tomorrow, we'll listen to Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Michael Moore (who's going to talk about his movie Sicko -about heath care), Rev Jesse Jackson and Howard Dean! Time to go to bed: I'm not far from being finished...

Meting with PES activists - 20-06-2007 06:21:54 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
So there we go: first meeting with PES activists in Washington. We gathered to a nice restaurant where we had a very informal and relax dinner. We met with 2 German guys Tim and Knut, a French chap called René and two Swedish ladies:Emma and Anne-Sofie. It was very interesting to exchange views about politics in the US and the possible interaction or link that we could set up between them and us in Europe and of course with other city groups.

Rally to the Capitol - 20-06-2007 06:15:00 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
Yes, we did it. Take back America took us to the Capitol in order to demonstrate in favour of the Employee Free Choice Act which should be voted by the senate in the days to come. The idea is to give American employees the right to join a trade union as long as a majority of employees in a company are in favour to do so. Quite impressive to be in a place where so many strong political events ook place. John Sweeny talked of course, but the speech of Teddy Kennedy had something more historical if I may say. We were all very stoical standing in 98° F (whatever it is in Celsius it's too much) and 75% humidity boohing, clapping, waving our panels. The drink we had after that was highly deserved!

Encounter with democrat candidates to the White house - 20-06-2007 06:07:57 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
Today 3 potential candidates to the White House talked to us: Governor Richardson who told us how much his state (New Mexico) is a state that cares for the environment. Actually, the recurring themes of this campaign seem to be: national health system, Irak, global warming, cleaning of American politics. Then talked senator Barak Obama: very impressive; a "natural born leader" as one of our delegation members defined him. Nice clean guy who talks to people's heart and who is willing to turn the page of old politics in the US. If this guy were to be elected to the White House, and of course if he complies with what he's saying, the world would definitely enter a new era. Barak Obama is a visionary, something quite unusual in American politics! Then came senator John Edwards: good speaker, but it's tough to speak after Obama. Edwards said that the first thing he would do as president of the US would be o close Guantanamo. He also said many things about the way the US should lead the world. He's not wrong but still a bit patronizing (we must show the way because these guys don't know how to do it...!). Hillary Clinton will be the first speaker tomorrow abd it seems that people are sleeping in the room to make sure they'll get a seat! Just kidding! Let's see tomorrow
