CV : Originally I am a historian with a special interest in political and social history and gender. Later on I became involved in different projects which led me to my job as a civil servant (County of Aarhus) within the field of European regional development and science. I am holding a position as a shop steward in the trade union. In my blog I will like to focus on global challenges, European social welfare and democracy from a gender point of view. Future challenges will be the consequences of the international division of labour, welfare (in)equalities and European democracy will be needed. Diversity but equal, democracy and life quality!

PES activists are one of the new initiative and a historical turning point. It is still under debate how to be organised efficiently and under the given circumstances and resources. In my point of view it should be organised transnationally in a modern non-bureaucratic networking way. My suggestion is to establish a transnational core group or task force of PES activist ambassadors from different European countries. A task force who are especially engaged in recruiting new PES activist and to disseminate and exploit the policy of a New Social Europe and policies of environment and climate.
The task force should be ambassadors and mentors in starting local transnational groups who can work more directly and action oriented. The local groups should be organised thematically following the structure of the new social Europe model outlined in the paper and in addition directly connected virtually to each other through the internet etc. This idea is opposite to the traditional way of thinking hierarchy and organisation, which often results in local groups without interrelations and only without international dimension in thinking and acting policy. But and this to be underlined the international dimension and networking is the core issue at stake of the organisation.
It demands resources of cause e.g. travels expenses, but it can be done by pin point a core group for the task force by finding people who are committed to European policy. Get them together for some days to discover and discuss the common goals and what to do to spread the idea and policy and get organised in networking groups, in addition to discus how to support this by new technology, IT and internet. The task force of core group of ambassadors and mentors should develop and action plan including conferences, seminars and workshops. This could be done accordingly to activities and public hearings in the European Parliament and conferences of the European Commission where there are relevant topics.
We have to start somewhere.

The PES 7th congress is organised in a new shape. This time PES activist or socialist grassroots from all over Europe are invited to participate both in the congress venue and in the debate on-line. This is a further challenge to democracy within the European socialist parties, that in it self inspires the national parties and also should challenge democracy at the outer world meaning especially the European Union and its member states. It will change if we participate to do so.

Let us never forget our human roots being concerned about ‘the citizens’ our lives and life quality. To gather experiences and knowledge for policy development we constantly need to face the voices, trends and tendency of the civil society and turn it into a progressive human policy and still challenging the voices of the market and get influence on the state. The organising of the congress is a further step towards this mission. Hopefully, you will join in a take part in the political debate for a new social Europe

New Social Europe - 30-11-2006 15:03:48 - Only logged activists can post a comment, please sign in or register here
I very much welcome the initiative for a new Social Europe, to be discussed at the upcoming PES Congress. In my point of view it looks like an innovative turning point of thinking and transforming the old values of equality, liberty and justice into the new century and adaptation to the global challenges of the international division of labour. Europe faces a lot of challenges of well known political issues, but also new ones are appearing. The strength of Europe’s competitiveness towards USA and Japan is well known, but towards a rapid changing China and India, Europe together with the rest of the western world faces new competitive challenges. The international division of labour and the market challenges is a strong force and has major implications for the citizens in the entire world and foremost for the European citizens. Some of the consequences are already at sight, and I believe the economic and political situation is just at its very beginning.

The aging population and small numbers of new generation to take over is a European challenge and will in combination with the structural changes of the market implicate a need of a larger and more rapid mobilisation of labour force cross geographic and social boundaries. In Denmark and elsewhere labour from former eastern Europe especially Poland are entering the labour market, but often ‘under cover’ to a very low price and no rights or duties. They are in my view very much welcome, but to the same price, rights and duties as for anyone else. This is a problem for the trade union to solve, but also the socialist parties have their duty to put it on the political agenda. Another problem Europe is facing is the minority of Roma’s who has been living in poverty for centuries marginalised by all nations. They are entering into Europe capitals and larger cities to try to survive and they are well organised. Illegal trade with women into prostitution is not a new phenomenon, but it is a growing problem and extremely rough and violent slavery. We, as socialist, need to face these kinds of challenges by thinking in diversity and multi-cultural terms rather than equality in the traditional way of thinking.
